7 Steps to Your 2023 Health and Wellness Goals

Many of us have just finished celebrating either Christmas or Chanukah, and others are beginning Kwanzaa. If you are willing, take a minute and check in with yourself no matter what you celebrate.

How are you feeling now that we are in the home stretch of "the season," which typically begins with Thanksgiving and ends with New Years?

  • Are you energized or exhausted?

  • Running on fumes or adequately fueled?

  • Are you grateful for friends and family or maxed out about one more obligation?

This time of year, we become hyper-focused on food, family, shopping, presents, socializing, and the potential last-minute cancellations that COVID and flu can bring.

It all adds up to a heaping amount of stress.

We begin thinking January 1; I am going to... (insert New Year's Resolution).
According to a recent Forbes article, The top New Years’ Resolutions are typically about self-improvement. Despite everyone's big plans, according to a study by the University of Scranton, only 8% of people achieve their resolutions long term.

Top New Years’ Resolutions: Which one are you?

  1. Living healthier 23%

  2. Getting happy 21%

  3. Losing weight 20%

  4. Exercising 7%

  5. Stopping smoking 5%

  6. Reducing drinking 2%

Sadly, if you tell yourself, New Year’s Day, I will go back on my diet; it worked before. The truth is, if you had truly been successful, you wouldn’t have to do it again. The plan to diet simply doesn’t work, and you are not alone. The statistics for diet “failure” are 95%.

As a non-diet health and wellness coach, I support my clients through the lens of curiosity and experimentation. They are not on or off a diet or sheepishly being good or bad. I help them gain clarity, confidence, and consistency, something a diet will never do.

Together we shift the focus and create the change needed to make a health and wellness goal a reality.

Together, let’s take the seven steps to make your 2023 health and wellness vision a reality:

  1. Create a health and wellness vision plan. A health and wellness vision plan is your foundation that fuels your motivation as you create a vision that expresses your values, passions, strengths, and heart desires. This roadmap helps you to define success. You are in charge and get to choose what success means to you.

  2. Set realistic goals through the framework of SMART goals. As much as we want, we can't wish something to happen magically. Our goals must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely.

  3. Get accountability/support through a coach. I am your biggest cheerleader! Support drastically changes your level of success. According to the Institute of Coaching, McLean, Affiliate of Harvard Medical School, the benefits of coaching showed that 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence and self-efficacy, which are imperative to change.

  4. Review and track your goals. This step makes a difference. Each week, meeting with a coach will help you notice your wins and strengths, help you evaluate what is working well, build on the success and help you pivot when needed to keep you on your success path.

  5. Plan how you are going to take action to meet the goal. Success comes with creating realistic action steps, breaking them down into bite-size actions, and scheduling them each week.

  6. Find a coach who believes in you. As I said above, a coach is your biggest cheerleader and helps you build self-efficacy as you build on your small wins one at a time. A coach will teach you how to believe in yourself because when you believe in yourself, you create the space to grow and change, and your goals become more attainable.

  7. Know and understand your WHY with clarity. The why is what motivates you to take action and achieve your goals. Ask yourself the five why's (asking Why 5 times) You may start by thinking, "I want to lose weight?" Go deeper. Why do you want to lose weight? I promise you, by the time you get to the 5th why, the answer typically comes down to confidence.

What actions and behaviors can you take to gain confidence? Here's where we can get "real," build your health and wellness vision, set goals that will give you clarity, competence, confidence, and consistency, and ultimately have you listen, trust and respect your body. That is health and wellness, not a number on the scale.

Let's UNDiet your life together in 2023 and focus on the actions and behaviors that will make you feel your best.
